2012 Cross Country Camp

posted Jan 17, 2012 6:25 AM by Allen Etheridge   [ updated Jan 17, 2012 7:11 AM ]

This year our camp will look quite different, as we won't stay anywhere overnight. Instead we will have a series of evening sessions (much like those we've had at Pickett) and day trips during the last two weeks of the summer before school starts. We are still in the planning stages of this year's camp, of course, but I wanted to make sure that when you make your summer plans you know that we won't be gone for a week .

Track and Cross Country Alumni

posted Dec 31, 2011 6:10 AM by Allen Etheridge   [ updated Dec 31, 2011 8:35 AM ]

During the break I ran with, ran into, or worked out with a number of former ORHS track and xc athletes. Here are a few:

Brian Kim (1985)--Brian and I ran together on the 1983 state champion team. He's a Ph.D. student in Media and Technology Studies at Arizona State University.

Capt. Adam Felde (2002) (USMC)--After tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, Adam is an instructor at the Mountain Warfare Training School in CA.

Eduardo Aramayo (2003)--Ed still competes regularly in events from the indoor mile to the marathon and lives in Baltimore.

1st Lts. Colin and Austin Buchans (2003) (US Army)--Both returned from stints in Iraq.

Whitney Irby (2008)  (USNA Senior)--Whitney runs on Navy's marathon team and has been accepted into the USMC.

Lauren Irby (2008)--Lauren just graduated from UT and plans to enter law school next fall.

Maclean O'Donnell (2008)--Senior at Texas A&M made the All-Conference and All-Region teams and ran at the NCAA championships this fall for TAMU.

Rett Myer (2009)--The junior at UT plans to spend the spring in Spain.

Melanie Kulesz (2009)--Junior at Asheville. Mel redshirted the fall xc season and is in great shape for track.

Corinne Laviviere (2009)--Chemistry major at VMI, Corinne still runs faster than the girls on the VMI team.

John Sharpe (2010)--John ran on NC State's ACC champion team this year and is running an unconscionable number of miles.

James "Dan" Miller (2010)--Dan just won the Secret City Half Marathon and continues to train like a demon at UT.

Autumn Gipson (2010)--The sophomore at MTSU ran #2-3 for MTSU this fall and ran in the South Region XC Championships.

Adrian Etheridge (2011)--Wish I got to run with her more! She's just finished her first semester at UNC-Asheville and ran #1 on their cross country team this fall.

Jessica Palmer (2011)--Jess just finished her first semester at ETSU and has raced several half marathons.

Allison Toth (2011)--Allison ran a PR of 19:30 for 5K this fall and rows for UT.

Jadon Short (2011)--The multiple state champion sprinter just finished his first semester at ETSU and is jumping and sprinting for ETSU indoors and outdoors this year.

Track Conditioning

posted Dec 9, 2011 9:15 AM by Allen Etheridge

I've had a lot of questions about track conditioning, since sprinters (and a few middle distance runners) have begun. Here are my answers.

1) If you are planning to run track this year, it's time to go ahead and start running on your own. I'd suggest a few times per week (3-4) to the tune of 2-4 miles each time at this point. You should go ahead and start doing some general strength work as well: air squats, pullups, pushups, core, etc.

2) Track conditioning for distance and middle distance runners will begin after school on the Tuesday we return from Christmas Break (January 3). These sessions will last about an hour and will focus on drills, speed, and strength. We will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays only for the first few weeks, so you'll be running on your own on the other days.

3) If you want to race indoors, the KTC Indoor meet is Saturday, January 28, 2012, at ETSU. There are no qualifying standards for this meet. More info later. The Kentucky High School Invitational on February 18 is a selective meet and has qualifying standards. More info on that later also. Finally, the New Balance Indoor Nationals is March 11-13 in New York City. As we have for the past few years, those athletes who qualify and wish to go will travel with the KTC. Info on that at www.nationalscholastic.org.
